Microsoft replaces SMS and call MFA with Passkeys
Microsoft will discontinue multi-factor authentication via SMS and phone call in Entra ID as of 1 February 2027. Starting 1 September 2026, affected users will be automatically enabled for Passkeys and prompted to register at their next MFA login. After the deadline, access will be blocked for those who have only SMS or call registered – there is no opt-out; customer-managed telecom providers are exempt. We are reviewing which of our managed service customers are affected and supporting the transition to Passkeys.
